Erik Hoel, P.Eng., graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, Civil Engineering, from the University of Durham, England, in 1955. He began his engineering career as a Hydraulic Engineer with Norwegian Hydro in Oslo, Norway. Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1957, he was the District Airport Engineer for the Norwegian Air Force, responsible for the design and installation of major underground radar stations and airport construction in Western Norway.

He spent his first years in Canada as a Hydraulic Design Engineer with the Fraser River Board, doing preliminary designs for the larger hydroelectric power stations on the Fraser River. For a short time, he was a Materials Testing Engineer with a local Victoria consulting firm.

In 1959, Erik established his own engineering firm in Victoria, performing structural and municipal/civil engineering, and designing wastewater treatment and disposal systems. During the late sixties, in association with Fritz Schultze, Architect, Erik was responsible for the design of approximately 60 larger condos and housing units in the Victoria area, including the first high-rise apartment building in Victoria.

Unfortunately, Erik passed away in October 2010. It seems his good-nature and practical engineering skills are needed elsewhere. He will be sadly missed.

Erik’s son, Jan Hoel, born in Bergen, Norway has been a resident of Victoria since 1957. Jan became a partner in his father’s business in 1978, when he graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

In 2001 he was approved by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC to practice professional engineering within his area of expertise.
Having worked his way up through the company since 1973, Jan has now assumed the responsibilities of CEO. He specializes in municipal/civil engineering, hydrology, storm and wastewater treatment and design.

Jan has done thousands of land development designs, ranging in sizes from 1 to 100 lots. He has always been able to produce efficient, cost-effective designs, while always maintaining an appropriate level of sensitivity to the surrounding environment.

Jan utilizes the excellent working relationships that he has cultivated over the years with our local and senior government agencies, contractors, and developers to facilitate and expedite our clients’ projects.

In his spare time Jan enjoys restoring old exotic cars, motorsports competition, recreational boating, and music

Edward Kyle graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree, Civil Engineering, from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in 2008.

Prior to immigrating to Canada in 2015, he worked for a number of firms in South Africa as a Civil and Structural Engineer, obtaining his Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in 2014. He is a member of the International Golden Key Honors Society, which is by invitation only for the top 15% of students, based solely on academic achievements.

Edward is a professionally registered Engineer in both Canada and South Africa. He has experience in both civil and structural projects most notably, rural and urban road design, aerodrome design, municipal services design, stormwater management, reinforced concrete and structural steel design as well as residential structural design.

In 2018, Edward became a Principal of the firm and manages the Engineering Department. We encourage our clients to take full advantage of his civil and structural expertise on projects, which can simplify the process and ensure the timely success for both important aspects of any project.

In his spare time Ed enjoys spending time with his family and traveling BC.

Dayn Hoel, Jan’s son, a native of Victoria since 1986, graduated from Belmont Secondary School in 2003. Dayn gained 7-years’ experience working with a number of well-respected local contractors, gaining competency in civil and concrete construction practices along the way.

In 2010, looking to develop a contracting division, Dayn joined Hoel Contracting. Since 2010 Dayn has successfully managed many construction projects and often works providing civil construction support for other people and companies in the industry.

Dayn’s advantage to clients is that he is able to benefit from 24/7 engineering support that other contractors don’t have. While not busy with construction projects, Dayn also provides technical assistance to our design engineers and construction review aspects of projects.

Dayn also has experience with installing sewage disposal systems, building drainage and stormwater management, as well as demolition and concrete work.

In his spare time, Dayn enjoys spending time with his son and renovating properties as well as motorcycle and karting competition.

Brian Topping was born and raised in Victoria and graduated from Spectrum School in 2007.

Before working for Hoel Contracting, Brian worked for a well-respected contractor performing building drainage, and plumbing services. During this time, he gained experience operating a wide variety of heavy machinery, and heavy equipment.

Since joining Hoel, Brian has been a pivotal member in the completion of many large-scale municipal projects, where he has gained experience installing sewage, water, drainage, and stormwater management systems, utilities, as well as experience in demolition and concrete work.

In Brian’s spare time, he enjoys working on his drift cars and racing at the local racetrack. He also enjoys the outdoors.

Aleshia was born in Toronto but was raised in Victoria since 1988. She graduated from Camosun College with a diploma in Environmental Technology in 2008 and then went on to pursue her degree at the University of Victoria. In 2012, Aleshia earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in geography.

Shortly after graduating UVic, Aleshia established her own cleaning company, which operated from 2012 until 2018 when she started with Hoel Engineering Group.

Throughout this period, prior to working with Hoel Engineering Group, Aleshia also worked as a Research Assistant for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, assisting with RFPs, cabinet concept papers, briefing notes, terms of reference, status reports and presentation materials.

Aleshia’s experience managing projects has provided many advantages to clients over the years, by ensuring the timely delivery of important documents and project milestones.

In her spare time, Aleshia enjoys gardening, painting, and anything that takes her outdoors.

Mohsen studied civil engineering and graduated with a M.Sc. degree from Isfahan University of Technology, Iran in 2011.

Prior to moving to Canada in 2016, Mohsen worked on different small to high-rise residential projects as a structural and construction engineer and obtained his professional engineering designation (Grade 3) in Iran.

Mohsen, also, studied Canadian design codes and principles through a CVT program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, Alberta and achieved academic excellence. After working with a construction management company in Calgary, Mohsen moved to British Columbia to pursue his interest in design of structural wood components, systems, and mass timber in 2020 and has been practicing as a Structural Engineer in Victoria since then.

Mohsen obtained his professional engineering designation (P.Eng) in British Columbia in August 2022.

His previous experience in steel and concrete design gives him great leverage in design for residential projects with conventional wood framing, engineered wood products, and hybrid systems.

In his free time, Mohsen enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and swimming.
